Multi-Lingual Scuba Dictionary

This dictionary was created in response to the growing internationalization of the internet and to facilitate communication between divers of different nationalities. It is hoped that the information here may be of use for browsing web pages, news groups and pre-dive check-outs.

It was compiled by an anglophone with the assistance of many people who have supplied the actual translations. Many ideas for organisation of a dictionary presented themselves during production. The tables below represent the information in the simplest form. Ordering of the categories, language groups and words reflect the structural organisation of the editor's mind rather than any subtle system.

The translations have been supplied by a host of volunteers in response to a phrase list provided by the editor. The translations are as accurate as possible although direct matches do not always exist. For example, I have supplied the nearest Norwegian translation for "exit point" as "ascent place" although the Norwegians themselves do not "exit" the water, they "go back on to land". Occasionally, there are two apparently equally valid translations; in these cases, both are provided.

Three observations stand out: Decompression, in any language, can always be abbreviated to "deco" and O-ring and Zodiac are universally recognised.

Searches for words can be made with the find command. Printouts are best made in landscape mode. The best document encoding to view these pages is ISO Latin-1 except for the Japanese page, which is best viewed by selecting the Japanese (auto detect) document encoding option. For Polish you must select language coding option ISO Latin-2, central European.
